SWE Magazine highlight: Engineering Medical Miracles

The Summer 2006 issue of SWE Magazine had a fascinating article on the application of rapid prototyping to medicine. The technology is truly amazing. As the article covers in detail, surgeons can use custom implants and 3-D models for planning and practicing operations built with sterolithography. In addition, 3-D printing technology is being applied to making complex drugs and vaccines, and even living tissue. The full text is available online for SWE members at the above link.

National conference hotel room

If anyone is planning to go to the SWE National conference and would like a room at the conference hotel for Thurs, Fri and Sat nights (two nights at conference rate, one only slightly higher) Anita Todd has a non-smoking room with two double beds reserved that will go unused. She would be happy to transfer the registration (the hotel is booked otherwise at the conference rate). Contact her at TODDAA@ucmail.uc.edu.

Bunco!

Last night we held a game of Bunco at my house for the SWE August Networking event. We had eleven players, with only myself and Aileen having previous Bunco experience. It was wonderful to have Aileen's help in explaining the rules, as I tend to forget the details. By the end of six rounds, everyone had a handle on the game and was able to focus on the true joy of Bunco... chit-chat and networking! A great time was had by all, and I think a few new connections were made. Eventually we will do it again, but in the meantime, if any other SWE members decide they want to host a game I'm sure you can find a few takers from last nights group.

We talked about getting together a group to see some of the touring shows coming to Cincinnati this fall, including Cirque du Soleil, The Lion King, and the Blue Man Group, and possibly having a candle party or Southern Living party. If you are interested, or have a similar event you'd like to invite SWE members to, contact myself or Stephanie.

Thanks to everyone who was able to come last night! The next event is a Happy Hour at Champps in Union Centre on Thursday the 21st at 6:00 pm.

Welcome

The purpose of this blog is to provide an informal forum for events and news concerning the South Ohio section of SWE, and the occasional deep thought on women and engineering. It is intended to provide insight into our local section, as well as highlighting some of the initiatives of national SWE.

If you have an event you would like to get fellow SWE members involved in, let me know and I'll be happy to post it here. If you have your own deep thoughts on women and engineering, or would like to post about SWE happenings, I can add you as a contributor.
